Mein Leben in Darmstadt

I was at Tate Modern in London. While viewing some of those "modern" art pieces, this certain piece of art caught my attention. It was just a simple clear plastic casing containing a piece of white paper, albeit yellowed at the edges. On tat piece of paper was written:

"The Past and Future have something in common .... not being Present."

Something went through my mind. Imagine that piece of paper is an empty space. An Empty Universe. This Universe has content. In this case, it is about time. Time is man made, as expressed by the artist typing it using a typewriter. We live in a universe so empty that we make things tangible for us to hold, feel and express. Time, as it seems to the artist or viewer(me), is one of the many things man made.

The comment typewritten is to deem meaningless. Time is meaningless, so is money, feelings, religion etc etc. But because elements like us exist, we create meaningless elements to account for our existence, to make ourselves meaningful. We create and build to sastify our fantasy and desires. All the things around us means nothing.

What about Nature? Plants and Animals? Aren't they something? As mentioned, these elements exist to sustain and account our existence. They are no more than puppets of creating sense and emotions within us to create this sense of reality, that we have meaning and purpose in our lives.
"Energy cannot be created or destroyed but only transferrable from one form to another." Stuff we learn that made sense. If there is nothing in the first place, why would there be energy? Are we an illusion? A facade? Part of something that is nothing?

Those were what i tot of when i view that particular artwork.

Simple yet powerful.

That's modern art, i guess.
